State elections division needs to correct misleading flyers
All of the state legislative races, the governor’s race and the U.S. Senate race on the ballot Aug. 16 are “pick one” contests. Voters are not allowed to rank their choices.
The only election in which voters make a first choice, second choice and third choice is the special general election to fill out the remaining months of Don Young’s term. The three candidates are Nick Begich, Mary Peltola and Sarah Palin,
That election is on one side of the ballot for Aug. 16. The other side of the ballot features the “pick one” primary.
I urge voters to look up a sample ballot on the election website and print it out. All of the sample ballots can be found here.
Some polling places have changed. To check on where to vote and your polling place, use this new search tool.
The state Division of Elections should correct political flyers that falsely suggest that voters will be able to vote for more than one candidate in state legislative races in the Aug. 16 primary.
Governor candidate Les Gara brought this to public attention Wednesday, but so far the state has not responded.
The Division of Elections has done a good job in communicating with the public. The elections office has many educational features on its website that I recommend to all.
What is needed above all else is clarity and consistency.
