Trump abandons Ukraine. Dan Sullivan declines to admit the betrayal

Let’s start with the obvious: There is no doubt that the Musk/Trump regime has abandoned Ukraine and is lying about the invasion of that nation by Putin.

But Sen. Dan Sullivan refuses to face the facts or admit what Trump has done.

In a statement from his office to the Anchorage Daily News, Sullivan claims Trump’s “goal in the current negotiations is to end the war and ensure a sovereign, independent Ukraine with protected borders.”

Here we have Alaska’s junior senator repeating Putin talking points favored by the Musk/Trump administration and passing them off as honest analysis.

“As they are going through this process, any agreement should be guided by the old Ronald Reagan adage with the Soviet Union, ‘trust but verify,’” Sullivan’s prepared statement said.

Sullivan, who can’t speak in public about these matters, should try to verify some of the nonsense that his office wrote for him.

Trump is lying about nearly every key point and Sullivan is unwilling to say so.

Sullivan saying that Russia, not Ukraine, started the war is a declaration along the lines of “water is wet,” as a friend of mine put it.

“Sullivan said he is ‘hopeful that these complicated negotiations will focus not only on ending the war in Ukraine, but also on the broader strategic interests of the United States, which include deterring and undermining authoritarian aggressors around the world,’” his statement to ADN claimed.

What process and “complicated negotiations” is Sullivan talking about?

The shameful one in which Trump has joined hands with Putin, disgracing the United States.

According to Sullivan’s office, Trump has a “a record of substantial achievement that advanced America’s interests and those of our allies.”

“Words are important, but it’s actions backed by power and force that ultimately matter in the world of geopolitics,” Sullivan’s statement said.

Here is the real howler from Sullivan: Compared to Obama and Biden, Trump “has a history of actions that are significantly harder on Putin — and the other dictators around the world.”

Sullivan is running for reelection in 2026. Holding him accountable means that his statements and actions, especially those in which he reverses his so-called positions to avoid offending Musk and Trump, need to be monitored and understood.

His comments about Ukraine are especially hypocritical because Sullivan never stopped attacking Biden for failing to do enough to help Ukraine fight Putin.

“No matter the soaring rhetoric from President Biden, his administration is not in it to win it in Ukraine,” Sullivan said last summer.

Now Trump is in it to win it. For Russia.

For a clear-eyed view of Trump’s betrayal, look not to Sullivan, but to conservative Jonah Goldberg, whose wife, Jessica Gavora, is from Fairbanks: “If saying Ukraine started the war gets you what you want, say that. If whining about the lack of elections will get you five more minutes of fawning coverage on Fox, say that. Trump wants Putin at G7 summits. He wants to visit Moscow. He wants Putin’s strongman musk to rub off on him in photo ops. There’s no grand strategy behind it.”
