Borough climate action committee meets at long last

At long last the borough Climate Action Committee meets Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Four of the members have submitted comments about revisions they want in the draft plan.

The most valuable are from scientist Terry Chapin and Borough Mayor Bryce Ward.

Then there are the remarks of assembly member Barbara Haney, a state employee who dropped a Nazi reference into her comments. She claimed that “‘partnering” with ‘civic groups’ that have not been elected by the people and having them monitor the actions of borough departments through a ‘Climate Action Coordinator’ seems more like NAZI Germany and is a direct contradiction to the nature of government as is understood and valued by borough residents.” And the remarks of Harmony Tomaszewski, who rejects any notion that sprawl has a downside, claiming “Alaska is all about sprawl.”

All members of the committee were replaced by Assembly Presiding Office Aaron Lojewski as his first act of business in November, an action he took with no justification.

Chapin, an internationally recognized researcher, was reappointed to the committee only after Kevin McKinley decided he didn’t want to be a part of it.
